The works on this survey as are as varied as the temperaments of their composers but are tied together by those composers' European training and American experience. The music has a unique flavor, especially when played, as it is here, on the kind of organ its composers were familiar with and to some extent, helped to shape. Despite its Old World forms, the music is distinctly American and teems with the qualities characteristic of nineteenth-century America--a touch of maudlin sentimentality leavened with lightheartedness, and pomposity balanced by fresh exuberance.
